Living in the Wilderness: Mathieu and Amanda’s Life in Kugluktuk

Mathieu lives just outside the town of Kugluktuk, which is only accessible by plane, with his Inuit wife Amanda and their son Thomas. He has lived in the area for more than twenty years because of his passion for living in the wilderness. Floortje visits the family in their house, which can only be reached by quad bike across the tundra.

“It’s tough, but I grew up with this and we’re raising our son the same way. If you deal with it from an early age, you adapt. You hunt to eat, you fish to eat You pick berries,” Amanda says about their lifestyle. “It’s hard work sometimes, but I don’t think I can ever live in the village again.”

Although she does find it difficult that she cannot spontaneously visit her sister, for example: “I have to plan things in advance and I have to take the weather into account. The weather dictates how we live and travel.”

For his work as a filmmaker, Mathieu goes out for days to shoot in the most extreme circumstances. “I’ve always been attracted to the cold. I don’t really know why. As a boy I just liked to play outside when the puddles were frozen. And when I was studying, I always had my window open in the winter and I would sleep without heating in my small apartment. When I woke up, I could see puffs of breath because it was so cold inside,” he says. “People thought I was crazy, but I wanted to practice so I would be prepared in case I found myself in the wilderness later.”

Floortje To The End Of The World can be seen every Thursday at 8:35 PM on BNNVARA on NPO1.
