Living and Working in Antarctica: A Year of Challenges and Solitude

LONDON – Michelle End, who is originally from San Francisco, recently moved to Antarctica to work as a manager at a polar station. She said being in one of the coldest places on Earth was an experience of a lifetime, but it took its toll. Her body had aged much faster in a single year on this continent than it would have done under normal circumstances.

Thirty-two-year-old Michelle moved to Antarctica in October 2022 to work as a service manager at the Amundsen–Scott polar research station. In addition to her, 42 scientific workers work there. She specifically takes care of canteen operations, accommodation, cleaning, retail and post office. She revealed what it’s like to live in a place where temperatures normally hover around -86 degrees Celsius and where she hasn’t seen the light of day for six months. He documents his stay on the coldest continent on Instagram.

To be honest, I’m running out of patience

In one of the videos, she revealed that the airport there is closing for the winter on February 15, which means that no one can get out or fly in until October 28. The American admitted that being in the presence of the same people for eight months at a time is sometimes difficult. “People deal with isolation in different ways. Some shut themselves up in their rooms and you hardly see them at all. I like most of my colleagues, but to be honest, I’m running out of patience.” She also talked about how it felt to see the sun for the first time in six months. “It felt like my body had aged a whole decade in that time, September was particularly bad for me. But I got through it.”

Michele in an interview for the magazine Newsweek revealed that she has always had a passion for travel. She has been traveling on her own since 2013. She has already managed to be on all continents, she got a job at the South Pole thanks to the National Science Foundation’s US Antarctic Program last fall. He lives with other workers at the station, which is built in a dormitory style. Every time he goes outside, he has to cover every part of his body, including his eyes, or they would immediately start to form ice.

She hadn’t seen any animals or trees in a whole year

Despite the fact that she considers staying on the icy continent very challenging, it is also a wonderful experience for her. “Life at the South Pole is a big challenge, it’s monotonous and it’s constantly cold. I haven’t seen any animals or trees here in that year. But I’m glad I did it,” says Endová, saying that she is very grateful for this experience. After her mission ends, she is said to be heading off somewhere to warm countries and is already looking forward to animals and fresh food.
