Living Abroad During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Student’s Perspective

# hang show | BK Rajesh 22 September 2023, 08:21 AM IST Ashutosh Yadav and sister-in-law Bhavika

Overcast sky. Covered pitch. They were standing in the gallery of the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Stadium, drenched in rain, with two minds. There is sadness on his face that he came to watch a game and it didn’t work out. A good Malayalam look at first glance. But they corrected it. We are from Delhi. They are fifth-year students at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University. Classmates. Not only that, the siblings too. Ashutosh Yadav says that the family is a game for the suspicion that brother and sister-in-law are in the same class. Sister-in-law Bhavika, who looked like a Malayalee laughing, confirmed it. When I started telling the story of China and the country, the first doubt was correct. Father Dr. R.C. Yadav is from Delhi. Mother Dr. Gracie is a Malayalee. Kottayam ploughman. Both have been practicing in Delhi for years.

It has been a long time since Ashutosh and Bhavika came to the country. It’s been a long time, four years, since I came home not only to Kerala but also to Delhi. Pre-Covid to be exact. The smile on Bhavika’s face became a small one when she said this. Don’t you miss the country? “A lot”. Neither of them had to think twice about the answer. Have a question? Gotta get home somehow. Even though I make video calls, I feel sad when I remember my father and mother. Been here for four years and still can’t get hold of any Chinese food.

But it wasn’t the food that made Ashutosh and Bhavika tired, it was the Covid period. When asked about that time, both of them have a look of shock on their faces. Usually there is no problem here. Life is normal. The local syllabus is the same here. Since the medium of study was English, it was not a big problem from the beginning. Everything went haywire with covid. That time was hard to remember. Except for a few of us, all the foreign students escaped to the country. We couldn’t go. By that time travel became a problem. There were only two of us in the class that day. Finally covid caught us too. Medicines were given from the university itself. I can’t even remember those days when I was locked up alone in the hostel room for days. Everyone in the country was also afraid because it was not far from Wuhan. However, there was no other problem because travel was banned here. Hangzhou was hardly affected. Very scared. That’s why life here is boring. Bhavika said that she wants to study in the country anyway.
