Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah Injured in Africa Cup of Nations Match Against Ghana

Liverpool’s English winger and Egyptian national team captain, Mohamed Salah, was injured on Thursday against Ghana at the Felix Ouvet-Boigny stadium in Abidjan, in the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations group competitions in Ivory Coast.

Salah (31 years old) fell after a collision with Ghana’s defenders, and remained lying on the ground for a few minutes, then emerged in pain while holding the back muscle of his thigh. Ghana took advantage of this, as its star, Mohamed Quddus, scored the goal to put the Black Stars ahead with a powerful shot from outside the area seconds later (45+3).

Salah, who was replaced by Pyramids winger Mostafa Fathi, handed over the captaincy to Saudi Al-Ittihad defender Ahmed Hegazy.

Salah (53 goals in 94 matches) saved his country from defeat against Mozambique in the opening match after scoring a penalty kick in the final seconds.

The winners of each group and the second-place finishers are guaranteed direct qualification to the round of 16, while the four best teams in third place from the six groups also qualify for the knockout rounds.
