Liverpool Uncomfortable Against Brentford

Liverpool

Liverpool really managed to beat Brentford 3-0. But, Jürgen Klopp admits Brentford made the Reds not play comfortably.

Liverpool need a win when they host Brentford at Anfield, Sunday (16/1/2022) night WIB. Because, there is a distance of 14 points with Manchester City who are at the top of the standings Premier League.

Just like in the goalless draw against Arsenal, Liverpool, who were dominant from the first minute, also struggled to dismantle the Brentford defense. It took 44 minutes before Liverpool could finally lead 1-0 through Fabinho’s goal. It was only in the second half, Liverpool could be more comfortable controlling the game but still struggling to add goals.

Liverpool increased their advantage in the 67th minute through Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain’s header before being closed by Takumi Minamino’s goal in the 77th minute. Liverpool won 3-0 while moving up to second place in the standings with 46 points, 11 points behind City.

The result is a relief for Klopp considering that Brentford made it difficult for Liverpool throughout the match. Long balls and counter attacks several times had penetrated Liverpool’s defense.

This is reminiscent of the first meeting at home to Brentford when Liverpool, who are twice ahead, had to settle for 3-3. The three Brentford goals came from Liverpool’s inability to overcome the opponent’s second ball or dead ball.

“Good result. It’s not comfortable against Brentford. They often do long balls. It’s our job to be ready for moments like this and stay calm. We did very well,” said Jürgen Klopp from BBC Sport.

“Brentford’s main strength is set pieces. It’s very difficult to defend against them and they always attack from the same side. You have to defend properly. We had a good set-piece execution today,” he continued.

“We did struggle a bit in the second half when they dared to attack. We had to adapt to that. They had dangerous chances and could score goals. We adapted, scored a beautiful goal and won.”
