Liverpool star striker Darwin Nunez had a serviceable first season at Anfield. Many still hoped to see even more of the Uruguayan, who finished the season on the bench for Jürgen Klopp.
The 24-year-old did indeed score 15 goals in all competitions, and delivered several excellent matches in the red shirt.
Lucas Leiva recently had a chat with Luis Suarez about the striker. The two Uruguayan forwards are teammates in the national team, and the old Liverpool hero knows his successor very well.
– Luis told me that Darwin is a shy boy, very quiet and calm, but a player who always wants to improve himself. He is a goalscorer and possesses extreme speed, so it will be important to give him the help he needs this season, Lucas told liverpoolfc.com.
Opinions around Nunez seem to be divided, with several being well satisfied with the striker’s contribution, while others expected far more from Liverpool’s second most expensive purchase.
– I think Darwin has been very good in his first season. We know how difficult it is to come (to England) and play. The demands are high, and Liverpool’s style of play is different, the Brazilian continues.
It has nevertheless been a season where we have seen the best and the worst from Nunez. He has been far down, when he received a straight red card against Crystal Palace, but also high up, such as in the 7-0 victory over Manchester United.
Lucas believes he needed time to adapt to life in England.
– We are of course looking forward to seeing him develop further in his second season, because he is young, fast and can score goals. Hopefully this season will be even better than the last, he concludes.
Darwin Nunez scored 6 goals in 29 games in his first season at Benfica. The following year it ended with 26 goals in 28 games. We’ll have to cross our fingers that the Liverpool striker can have a similar development at Anfield.
