Liverpool remain clear after a convincing home win over Arsenal

Liverpool is still clear in the Premier League. At Anfield, Arsenal were defeated 3-1, after Jürgen Klopp’s team fell behind.

Liverpool, with Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum in the starting line-up, won the first match against Leeds United (4-3) and beat Chelsea (0-2) last week. The game with Arsenal was the second serious test of The Reds.

The English national champion started the game well, but fell behind. A big mistake by left back Andy Robertson was punished by Alexandre Lacazette, who eagerly unwrapped the present and passed goalkeeper Alisson. Two minutes later it was already right when Sadio Mané, who just before flirted with red, tapped in from close by on a pass from Mohamed Salah.

Mane’s equalizing goal gave Liverpool wings, as the home team managed to turn the backlog in a period of six minutes. Robertson corrected his mistake and gave Liverpool the lead.

Arsenal was certainly not without a chance. The Gunners had several chances in the second half to put the equalizer on the scoreboard, but Mikel Arteta’s attackers lacked sharpness and conviction. It remained exciting until the final phase, but Liverpool closed the game in the 88th minute. Million gain Diogo Jata determined the final score at 3-1.
