Liverpool, Premier League | Former Liverpool player worried about the Salah situation

Mohamed Salah has been in brilliant form for Liverpool this season, but negotiations for a new contract for the star seem to be delayed.

Both the player himself and Liverpool have repeatedly stated that there is no cause for concern and that much is in place for the parties to reach an agreement, but as we write the end of January, the fans are still waiting for a clarification.

Salah’s current contract with Liverpool expires in the summer of 2023 and this means that the red club should preferably have a new contract in place before the summer window to avoid speculation and pressure with a view to the future of the Egyptian.

– I’m concerned

Former Liverpool player José Enrique states in an interview that he was initially not so worried about the situation, but that that perception has changed.

– I was not worried this summer, but I am now. He has only a little over a year left on his contract and it does not look like they are any closer, he says according to The Mirror.

– Of course I do not know everything that goes on behind the scenes, but I’m worried. If you are not willing to pay a player of such quality what he wants, it is not exactly just going out to find another player at the same level, the Spaniard believes.

The former left-back, who played for Liverpool in the period 2011 to 2016, believes the Anfield club must do everything in their power to land a new contract with Salah.

– A big problem

José Enrique still believes that the negotiations with Salah are not the only thing that can create problems for Liverpool. He is skeptical of the width of the stable.

– They lack depth in the attacking trio. That’s a big problem for Liverpool. Diogo Jota has done a great job, as have Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

– But they need another player who can perform there in the same way as Diogo Jota. He scores goals and plays well. I feel that Liverpool need another player in the 40-50 million pound class up there. I’m sure if you ask any Liverpool fan, you’ll get the same answer, says the Spaniard.

Liverpool have had to do without the attacking duo Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah in recent matches, due to the two participating in the African Championship.

Early Friday morning, however, comes a news that will probably please José Enrique. Well-informed journalists Paul Joyce and Fabrizio Romano both report that Liverpool are in the process of buying Porto player Luis Diaz.

The club is said to have submitted a bid of around 40 million euros, with bonuses of up to 25 million euros. According to Romano, the Porto player should have been at the top of the club’s wish list.

– The worst is over

The period without Mané and Salah is also coming to an end now and the former defender must also admit that the Reds have done well without the stars.

– The worst period for Liverpool is over. When the two are back, the club will probably think “why should we sign someone new now?”.

– I was not particularly positive before the African Championship. I did not expect Liverpool to do as well as they have done, says José Enrique.

Liverpool stands with 48 points after 22 games in the Premier League and is with it nine points behind Manchester City at the top. Liverpool have one game less played.
