Liverpool –
Liverpool have struggled this season and are almost certainly without a trophy. Former ‘Red’ player Xherdan Shaqiri shares his views on the situation at Anfield.
Liverpool have struggled this season. They are currently still stuck in sixth place in the Premier League, while having been eliminated from the English League Cup and FA Cup.
In the Champions League, the way out was waiting for ‘The Reds’. Because they are in a position behind 2-5 from Real Madrid going into the second leg of the round of 16.
Liverpool’s performance this season has indeed invited the spotlight. Mohamed Salah and his friends were considered not as strong as before, and were even considered to have failed to play football Juergen Klopp known for being intense and up-tempo.
Much of that has been attributed to an aging and fragile midfield. This sector does contain veteran players such as Jordan Henderson and James Milner, then names that are prone to injury such as Naby Keita, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, to Thiago Alcantara.
A different view was expressed by former Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri. He suspects that maybe the opponents already have a solution for Liverpool’s game and a slight change in tactics could make them more unpredictable.
“I’m a bit far now from what happened there, so yeah it’s a bit difficult. I see maybe they’ve been playing the same style of football for years, and the other teams are getting better too,” Shaqiri said. Liverpool Echo.
“So the opponents analyze the team and maybe they need, maybe yes, change the formation sometimes. Because I don’t think Liverpool play a lot of formations and they play with the same formation for a long time.”
“Yeah, maybe they now know how to deal with Liverpool and it’s the same with Barcelona and the tik-taka. Every style of football, at some point, they knew how to deal with it.”
“So maybe they should change a bit. But I’m too far away, as I said before, to say my opinion because it’s not there anymore and I don’t really know what’s going on there at the moment,” he added.
Shaqiri believes that Klopp is still the right person to lead Liverpool. They will learn from this season and bounce back soon.
“I’m sure Jurgen will turn this situation around, and they know what they’re doing, and I’m pretty sure they’ll be back on top as soon as possible,” said the Swiss international.
