Liverpool Fans Protest Singing God Save the King during Premier League Match Against Brentford

Liverpool

Lagu God Save the King which reverberates in Anfield drowned in yells and cheers from Liverpool fans. The action was a form of resistance to the coronation of Charles III as the new king of England.

Along with the ceremony of ascending the throne which took place on Saturday (6/5/2023), the Premier League asked the teams hosting this weekend’s matches to mark the ceremony, including Liverpool who hosted Brentford.

The city is known to have a bad history with royalty, so the decision to sing the national anthem angered fans. However, the club also did not prohibit protest attributes from entering the stadium.

When God Save the King was played, immediately the voices of the fans immediately resounded in the stadium. In the televised match, banners and posters of rejection were seen being held aloft.

One of them reads ‘not my king’, an affirmation that they do not recognize Charles III. There were also those who held up a piece of paper that read ‘only one king’ along with a photo of Kenny Dalglish beside it, claiming that only the former Liverpool striker was the one they considered king.

On the field, not a single player sang God Save the King, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had never done so while in the England national team uniform. Andy Robertson, who is a Scottish national, was also silent like the ‘foreign players’ who respected the procession.

On the bench, only Jordan Henderson was seen mumbling along to sing. As soon as the national anthem finished playing and changed to the song You’ll Never Walk Alone which is a typical Liverpool anthem.

Regarding these actions, Liverpool emphasized that every supporter has a personal choice in the coronation of Charles III as king of England. Meanwhile, manager Juergen Klopp is more diplomatic, saying that as a German, he doesn’t have a strong opinion about that.
