Liverpool won today against Manchester United. In a gala performance at the Theatre of Dreams, Arne Slot’s team won the Northwest derby against their arch rivals with a landslide: 0-3. Mohamed Salah was the celebrated man for the away team, he provided two assists and scored one goal. Luis Díaz scored the other two goals.
At Liverpool, Cody Gakpo had to make do with a place on the bench again. Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk were allowed to play from the kick-off by Slot. The nine other names on the team sheet were the same as in last weekend’s match against Brentford (2-0 win). At United, Matthijs de Ligt was allowed to start from the start for the first time. That was at the expense of Harry Maguire. Joshua Zirkzee also started in the starting line-up, as did Alejandro Garnacho. That was at the expense of Amad Diallo and Mason Mount, who was injured. New signing Manuel Ugarte was not yet in the match selection.

The match started intensely, with a high tempo and a driven United that made things difficult for Liverpool. But despite the good start, United failed to create any chances. Liverpool initially didn’t either, until the 35th minute. Casemiro simply delivered a ball in his own half to Gravenberch, who played it to Salah on the right. The Egyptian crossed the ball and Luis Díaz was able to head the ball unhindered at the far post: 0-1. Seven minutes later, United seemed to receive the final blow when Casemiro again lost the ball in midfield. The ball came back to Salah, who reached Luis Díaz in the penalty area with a beautiful pass with the outside of his left foot. The Colombian then shot flawlessly from twelve meters low into the right corner: 0-2. That was also the half-time score.

In the 56th minute, Salah ended all uncertainty. Kobbie Mainoo was outplayed in midfield by Alexis Mac Allister, who passed the ball to Dominik Szoboslai. The Hungarian then served Salah, who shot flawlessly: 0-3. After that, the game was over, the pace slowed down and Liverpool easily held out against a powerless United.

Liverpool unbeaten at the top
With the third win in a row, Liverpool are undefeated at the top of the Premier League, together with Arsenal and Manchester City. It is striking that Slot’s team has not conceded a single goal. United find themselves in the grey middle group and must guard against another lost season. After the international break, Liverpool will receive Nottingham Forest at Anfield. United will visit Southampton, who have also started badly, and will try not to immediately come within an insurmountable distance of the top teams.
