Liverpool and Arsenal start Premier League season with wins

London. Liverpool and Arsenal both won, while the prolific Mohamed Salah and the long-serving James Milner broke records on the first Saturday of the Premier League season.

Liverpool’s new era under Arne Slott began with a 2-0 win at promoted Ipswich and Salah scored the second goal to take his tally of goals in the opening game of the Premier League season to nine, breaking the record previously shared with three legends – Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Frank Lampard.

Arsenal, who have finished second in the last two seasons, also won 2-0 at home to Wolverhampton thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Buyako Saka.

Liverpool and Arsenal are expected to be the biggest threats to champion Manchester City, who will be looking to extend their record with a fifth straight top-flight title. City begin their title defence on Sunday against Chelsea after the season opened with Manchester United’s 1-0 win at Fulham on Friday.

Elsewhere on the day, Newcastle overcame a 28th-minute red card for Fabian Schar for a headbutt to beat Southampton 1-0 thanks to a Joelinton goal. They also had one Everton player sent off, Ashley Young, in a 3-0 home defeat to Brighton.

Brighton had James Milner, who at 38 began his 23rd Premier League season to surpass Ryan Giggs’ record of 22 campaigns with United. Milner is seven years older than manager Fabian Hurzeler, who began his Premier League journey with a win after signing from St. Pauli.

Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 with Bournemouth in a match that saw Forest’s Brazilian midfielder Danilo suffer a serious leg injury, who was carried off on a stretcher after a screen was placed around him while he received treatment.
