Liverpool and AC Milan clash, Barça loses again

England: Chelsea stay on the podium, Burnley hangs on

The Reds Liverpool took an hour to find the opening against Everton (2-0) and keep in touch with leader Manchester City on Sunday during the 34th day of the English championship. They are still a point behind the Cityzens, wide winners of Watford on Saturday (5-1).

Jürgen Klopp’s players literally confiscated the ball from their opponent, especially in the first half, with only 13% possession and 32 successful passes for Everton… Until the opener, on the hour mark, the Reds were however very little threatening, with no shots on target.

At the same time, the Toffees gave the impression of being able to carry the danger in counter-attack, thanks in particular to the young winger Anthony Gordon. To the point of insinuating doubt, a season after an unforgettable derby (2-2, October 17, 2020), which had marked a breaking point in the course of Liverpool, with the serious injury of Virgil Van Dijk.

The Reds found the opening thanks to a one-two between Salah and Origi, who had just come into play less than two minutes earlier, then a cross towards Andrew Robertson at the far post (1-0, 62nd). Divock Origi then took advantage of a half-successful return from Luis Diaz to place an opportunistic header (85th, 2-0).

The Blues from Chelsea struggled to overcome West Ham (1-0) at the very end of the game and retained their third place (65 pts) with a comfortable lead over Arsenal (60) and Tottenham (58). West Ham remain in seventh place.

The West Londoners erase their last performance at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday, marked by a severe defeat against Arsenal (2-4).

The two formations did not frame any shot in a rather dull first period, marked by a sterile domination of Chelsea, with for example 70% possession of the ball. The reigning European champions, whose only major fixture now is the May 14 FA Cup final against Liverpool, have rarely brought danger from the wings, partly due to the absence of Reece James.

Chelsea’s dominance then became clearer, with two chances for Werner within the next four minutes.

The Blues made the difference at eleven against ten after the dismissal of Hammers defender Craig Dawson, who had held Romelu Lukaku spinning on goal.

Jorginho completely missed his penalty, shot weakly in the middle at ground level, in a reminiscence of his 2 missed penalties last year against Switzerland and which cost Italy qualification for the World Cup.

A tumble from Marcos Alonso and a perfect cross finally allowed Christian Pulisic to score the winning goal (90th, 1-0).

Italy: Milan regains the lead, Naples loses ground

AC Milan clings to its seat as leaders of Serie A, maintaining a two-point lead over Inter Milan (2nd) thanks to a victory snatched in added time in Rome against Lazio (2-1 ), Sunday evening during the 34th day.

Surprised at the start by Ciro Immobile (4th), the Rossoneri equalized at the start of the second half thanks to Olivier Giroud (50th).

Their outrageous domination at the end of the match, with the return to the field of Zlatan Ibrahimovic entered for the last 25 minutes, found its reward in the dying seconds thanks to a goal snatched by Sandro Tonali (90 + 2nd).

Milan is two points ahead of Inter, winner of AS Roma on Saturday (3-1), and seven over Naples, which is now almost out of the race for the scudetto after its defeat at Empoli (2-3). But the Nerazzurri can regain the lead on Wednesday if they win their late game in Bologna.

On the other hand, Naples can say goodbye to the title. The Neapolitans lost 3-2 at Empoli on Sunday after a game they dominated until the 88th minute.

The Neapolitan defense completely sank in the last ten minutes. The full-back Kevin Malcuit first lost a ball which allowed Empoli to come back to 2-1 by Liam Henderson (80th) then his goalkeeper Alex Meret was countered just in front of his own line by Andrea Pinamonti on the 2-2 (83rd). The same Pinamonti, euphoric, then threw himself (88th) to conclude an improbable turnaround.

Until this nightmarish end to the match, Naples had however been the most effective in taking off thanks to Dries Mertens (44th) and Lorenzo Insigne (53rd). But Luciano Spalletti was betrayed this time by his defense, the strong point of the team this season, in the absence of the “rock” Kalidou Koulibaly, suspended.

Franck Ribéry’s team (18th) is now only three points away from Cagliari, the first non-relegation player (17th), whom it will receive on May 8.
