Dexamethasone, a potent steroid effective to treat the sick of the Covid-19 the most severely affected, according to results announced Tuesday by british researchers, is “already used on a large scale” in the French hospitals, said on Wednesday the infectiologist Karine Lacombe.
“The dexamethasone is part of the family of corticoids. (…) In France, it was very quickly given very early corticosteroids in patients who had the Covid-19 because it reduces the inflammation of the lungs,” said on the radio “France Inter” the head of the department of infectious diseases hôpital Saint-Antoine (AP-HP). “We know that it is a treatment that works, it has been used on a large scale”, she added.
The leaders of the large clinical trial british Recovery announced on Tuesday that the drug reduced deaths by a third in the patients placed under mechanical ventilation, and one-fifth of patients less severely ill, ventilated but not intubated.
