According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about one in ten people in the world has already been infected with the coronavirus. This means that the actual number of infections is much higher than the number of infections reported worldwide.
“Our best estimates tell us that about 10 percent of the world’s population may be infected with the virus,” said Mike Ryan, WHO’s chief of emergency operations at a meeting in Geneva on Monday.
Of the 7.8 billion people in the world, about 35 million people have officially been diagnosed with the virus. In reality, hundreds of millions of people are said to have been infected. The WHO official did emphasize that this means that the vast majority of people do not have antibodies and therefore remain at risk for Covid-19.
