Situation
A heat wave episode concerns the regions ranging from Alsace and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to PACA and Corsica. The nights are tropical with temperatures that do not drop below 20°C and even below 22-23°C in certain large cities such as Lyon, Nice or Perpignan. In the afternoon, temperatures often reach the 35°C mark with peaks between 37 and 39°C in certain plains or valleys in the center-east and south-east. The peak of very high heat will be reached on Tuesday afternoon with 40-41°C expected in certain Alpine valleys and in the interior of Provence. The city of Grenoble should reach the 40°C mark in the shade!
At the same time, a major stormy degradation is taking place from the center-east to the northeast on Tuesday afternoon and evening. After a sweltering day, these storms are likely to be particularly violent and will put an end to the heat wave, at least in the north of the Rhône-Alpes region.
Observation
Summary of the maximum temperatures of this Monday afternoon:
It was in the PACA region and in eastern Languedoc that the temperatures were the highest with 36.3°C in Marseille (13), 38°C in Prades-le-Lez (34), 38.7° C at Luc-en-Provence (83), 38.9°C at Avignon (84), 39.0°C at Visan (84), 39.1°C at Nîmes, 39.3°C at Montfort-sur -Argens (83) and 40°C in Saint-Chamas (13).
In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 35.3°C was observed at Lyon-Tête d’Or, 35.6°C at Vérizieu (01), 36.6°C at Valence (26), 37.7°C at Grenoble (38).
Temperatures were down slightly from the day before from Burgundy to Alsace with 32 to 34°C
At 15hvery high temperatures are generalized from the south of the Rhône valley to the interior of Provence with 35°C in Montélimar (Drôme), 36°C in Donzère (Drôme), 37°C in Orange (Vaucluse), in Arles (Bouches-du-Rhône), in Draguignan (Var), 38°C in Istres (Bouches-du-Rhône), in Luc (Var), 39°C in Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône) and 40°C in Saint-Chamas (Bouches-du-Rhône).
The heat is a little less marked than expected in the north of Rhône-Alpes, due to greater cloud cover this morning. There were 30°C in Saint-Etienne (Loire), 33°C in Lyon (Rhône) and Bourgoin (Isère), 34°C in Vérizieu (Ain) and 35°C in Romans-sur-Isère (Drôme).
At midday, the heat is overwhelming in PACA, with 34.7°C in Carros (Alpes-Maritimes), 34.6°C in Aubagne (Bouches-du-Rhône), 33.8°C in Collobrières (Var) and 31°C in Avignon (Vaucluse). The heat is a notch lower in the center-east, although already marked with 26.6°C in Saint-Etienne (Loire), 30.7°C in Ambérieu (Ain), and 30.5°C in Parc from the Tête d’Or in Lyon (Rhône).
Last night has been tropical in the southeast. The minimum temperatures recorded at the end of the night were very high with 24.2°C in Fréjus, 24.3°C in Marseille, 25.3°C in Nice, 26.5°C in Menton. In the center-east, minimum temperatures were 24.5°C in Lyon-Tête d’Or, 23.1°C in Mâcon, 20.6°C in Saint-Etienne.
Evolution
Storm Parameter
Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.: it is very hot on the entire east facade with sheltered temperature values generally between 35 and 39°C, with a few peaks at 40°C, in the alpine valleys where the foehn (south wind) blows between 60 and 70 km /h. The first cells develop between the north of Auvergne and Burgundy. The storm cells then multiply rapidly, in particular fed by the overheated soils, at the front of the Lorraine plateaus in Lyonnais. They can be virulent with sudden gusts >90 km/h and heavy rain showers and marked electrical activity.
Tuesday evening : THE storms rise quickly in Franche-Comté and the northeast where the risk of hail reaches 80% with a high probability of hailstones >3 cm or even 5 cm, being therefore likely to cause major damage. If the risk of runoff and flooding is possible, due to heavy showers, the other worrying parameter is the wind. Some supercells could generate downbursts of the order of 100 to 130 km/h and some vortex phenomena.
Night from Tuesday to Wednesday: while the storms are rapidly evacuating towards Germany in the middle of the night, another rain-stormy axis is developing between the south of Toulouse and the north of the Alps with a high probability of significant accumulations of rain. This is why this alert will be extended to other departments in the southwest and the Alps for this second salvo.
During the first stormy wave, we expect:
– a high risk of large hail (>3-5 cm) from the north of Rhône-Alpes to Alsace-Lorraine
– violent downbursts that can reach 100 to 130 km/h
– risks of vortex phenomena
– maximum water piles of 20 to 30 mm in 1 hour and risks of local flooding
Heat parameter
The episode of very strong heat continues until Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. We expect 34 to 36°C from Alsace to Burgundy and Lyon. In the south-east, temperatures are between 36 and 40°C between Vaucluse, the center of Gard and Provence. It is Tuesday afternoon that we expect the highest temperatures with 36° to 38° C from Alsace to Lyon, up to 40° C in certain Alpine valleys and in particular in the Grenoble area. We also expect peaks of 40-41°C in the center of the Var!
At night, temperatures do not drop below 20°C in the large cities of Alsace and Burgundy, 23-24°C in the Lyon area and 23 to 26°C in the cities of the south-east.
This period of very hot weather in the afternoons and tropical nights will continue until Tuesday evening from Alsace to the Center-East and will continue for a few more days in the South-East, which will experience a longer period of heat wave, reason why this special announcement may be extended if necessary.
