Live Updates: Highlights and Latest Developments of Vuelta a España 2023

This is not a live blog, but we will keep you informed of the latest developments during each stage of the Vuelta a España 2023. Consider this article a live summary to smoothly scroll through the highlights. Commentators Jeroen Vanbelleghem and Karsten Kroon regularly summarize the day so far. We do the same here, including videos. You really don’t miss anything!

New leading group

A new leading group has broken away from the peloton, but there are few real climbers among the six. So we seem to be seeing a battle between the classification men for victory. These are the names of the escapees: Mattia Cattaneo (Soudal Quick-Step) Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Julius van den Berg (EF Education), Nicolas Prodhomme (AG2R), Max Poole (Team DSM) and Joel Nicolau (Caja Rural).

Escapees seized

It cost them blood, sweat and tears, but INEOS Grenadiers still managed to close the gap. Will they manage to send a man along, or is everyone burned out by now?

Soler struggles

Meanwhile, Marc Soler is having a hard time at the tail of the peloton. The current number six in the general classification is constantly at the back and seems to have come out of the rest day with bad legs.

Ten escapees

Ten riders form today’s first leading group. Louis Vervaeke, Romain Grégoire, Kaden Groves, Andreas Kron, Andrea Piccolo, Paul Lapeira, Matteo Sobrero, Romain Bardet, Max Poole and Samuele Battistella hope that the peloton will keep its legs still. INEOS Grenadiers has no one with them and is still trying to close the gap.

We left!

Tough final

The sixteenth stage of the Vuelta is 120 kilometers short, but short does not mean easy. At the end it becomes ‘just’ tough again, because after an undulating run-up, a second category climb has been placed on the course.

The climb leads to the finish in Bejes and has some tough passages. It starts tough, with sections of 10 to 12 percent slope and after a slightly easier section it becomes just as difficult as it was in the beginning.

Red jersey Kuss seems safe

Steep, black strips according to the profile of the climb, which is 4.8 kilometers long. The average increase is 8.8 percent, regardless of the heavier sections. It will certainly be explosive, but it seems impossible that minutes will be thrown around.

Sepp Kuss’s red jersey seems safe for the time being. Maybe even as far away as Madrid, but the answer to that question will definitely follow later this week.
