LIVE | The Netherlands is still purchasing corona vaccine indefinitely Inland

The Netherlands wants to buy millions of doses of a vaccine that should protect against the corona virus with three allies. It is far from certain that the vaccine is safe and works, but the Netherlands, Germany, France and Italy want to take that gamble. If all goes well, the Netherlands could possibly get a large party by the end of this year, insiders report.

Negotiations of the four countries with the makers of the vaccine are not yet fully concluded, according to the sources. Not all countries have agreed yet. But that seems to be a formality.

If the vaccine proves to be safe and effective and is allowed to enter the European market, the four countries will not keep the entire batch purchased for themselves. They agreed that it will be fairly distributed among the countries of the European Union.

A worldwide race is underway to find a drug that protects against the pandemic virus. And an equally great battle between, for example, China, the US and Europe, and then immediately get hold of it. The country that can vaccinate its population first, for example, can get its economy up and running faster again.

New death toll

Another nine compatriots have died from the coronavirus, Friday showed. Their deaths were reported in the past 24 hours to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The official death toll has thus risen to 6053. The actual number of deaths is probably higher, because not everyone is tested and because deaths are sometimes only passed on after a while.

The number of hospital admissions rose by 5 to 11,813. The total number of corona cases increased by 210. The coronavirus has now been diagnosed in 48,461 Dutch people.
