In the Ukrainian capital Kiev in several districts will continue fighting; Ukrainian armed forces are fighting an attack by Russian occupation forces. The Kiev municipality urges residents who are not ready to take part in hostilities not to appear on the streets.
“There are battles on the streets of our city right now. Please keep calm and be as careful as possible! If you are in the shelter, stay there. If you are at home, stay away from the windows, do not go to the balcony,” warns the city administration.
CONTEXT:
Russian President Vladimir Putin recognizes Donetsk and Luhansk “People’s Republics” on February 21 independence from Ukraine. Putin also threatened Ukraine by demanding that Ukraine immediately cease hostilities against the separatists, “otherwise all responsibility for the possible continued bloodshed will rest entirely with the conscience of the Ukrainian regime.”
But on February 24, Putin announcedthat Russia has launched a “military operation” in Ukraine and called on the Ukrainian army to “lay down its arms”. This caused the democratic world even more condemnation and the next steps in sanctions against Russia.
