Live Text allows iPhones on iOS 15 to search for text in the Camera app

Apple revealed that when iOS 15 hits iPhones in September, it will allow them to select text directly from photographs to copy, share, and search through a tool called Live Text.

Live Text will be able to recognize text in images taken on iPhone, shared images from friends or the web, screenshots and can even spot text in the live viewfinder of the app. ‘camera.

Apple showed examples of iPhones scanning text from a whiteboard with meeting notes, recognizing the restaurant’s name in a logo on its sign, and selecting details from a cup of Boba. Apple even claims it can digitize handwritten notes and recipes.

Tap the Live Text button in the Camera app to instantly convert any recognized text, letting you select and copy it, but it can also extract text directly from saved images.

You can copy, save and share this text, or search for it directly – by searching for the restaurant or ingredient you just found in the text. It’s also smart enough on context to recognize a phone number and instantly turn it into a link to open the Call app.

In addition to English, Live Text currently works in seven languages, including Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

Live Text will be included in iOS 15, which is expected to arrive alongside the iPhone 13 series in September, when it rolls out to existing iPhones as a free update as well.
