Two giant live streaming video “ports” now connect New York City and Dublin, Ireland – all part of an artist’s plan to bring the world closer together.
This pair of portals, which became active on Wednesday, will connect the two cities – separated by more than 3,000 miles – with a live video link 24/7. The New York City Portal is in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, and the Dublin Portal is installed near O’Connell Street, the city’s main street.

With four ports now operational, the project is “moving closer to realizing the vision,” Portals.org says on its website, about distributing the live stream video among the cities.
So people in New York could see Dublin through their Portal now, but soon they could be connected to people in Lithuania and Poland, where the original ports reside .
“The single biggest misconception about Portals that sometimes scares me a little is that it’s not just about connecting two countries,” Benediktas Gylys said in a statement. Gylys got the idea for Portal in 2016 after a mysterious experience, he says. He has a team Vilnius Gediminas Technical University he helped complete the first two sculptures.

Gylys has seen people transformed when they encounter a Portal.
