From 2 p.m., there will be a debate in the Flemish Parliament about the PFOS pollution left behind by the American multinational 3M in and around Zwijndrecht. Who is responsible and what must be done?

“What could possibly have gone wrong in the past, we have to consider in the inquiry committee on which you as parliament will decide today. That’s what I’m assuming. As a government, we will loyally cooperate in this.” That is what Flemish Prime Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) said on Wednesday at the start of the current debate in the Flemish Parliament about PFOS pollution.
Jambon opened his statement by repeating that the plea of Minister of Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA) for a commission of inquiry had not been discussed within the government. But then he confirmed that that government will cooperate with the commission. “We need to learn lessons about how we can work much better with various government agencies so that all essential information reaches all relevant agencies faster and decisive action can be taken more quickly,” he said.

Jambon then called on people to be careful with questions to shut down the Oosterweelwerf. “Let us not forget the long road we have traveled in this dossier. It took us no less than twenty years of preparation and we are finally building one of the most important mobility and quality of life projects in Western Europe.”
He emphasized that client Lantis is in no way to blame for the pollution and is even part of the solution.
