The latest on the war in Ukraine

Russian invaders in Ukraine have destroyed or destroyed 202 schools, 34 hospitals and more than 1,500 homes, including apartment buildings, Mikhail Podolak, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chancellor, said on Twitter.

He called the Russian army barbarians who could not fight the military but could kill civilians.

Podolak also informed that more than 900 settlements in Ukraine are completely without electricity, water and heat.

Humanitarian corridors in Mariupol, besieged by Russian forces, have been mined

In Mariupol, surrounded by Russian forces, humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians are leading to a mined road, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Monday.

ICRC spokesman Dominik Stilhart called on the two warring parties to agree immediately on the exact routes and times when people could evacuate.

“Unfortunately, so far we have only seen agreements in principle. But they immediately fell apart because they lacked precision, “Stilhart told the BBC in an interview with the British broadcaster.

“They lack (…) agreements on time, on roads, on whether people can leave or goods can enter,” he added.

“We have a team in Mariupol on site to give you an idea. They were ready yesterday (Sunday), despite the fact that it was not entirely clear what the agreement was, ”said Stilharts.

“As soon as they reached the first checkpoint, they realized that the path they had been given was actually mined,” Stilhart said.

Attempts to take people out of Mariupol, where fierce fighting is taking place, have failed for the second day in a row because the Russian army has not stopped firing.

Russia said on Monday it had declared a “silence regime” at 10 a.m. and was opening humanitarian corridors to allow peaceful people to leave Kiev, Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy. However, according to maps published by Moscow’s official media, some humanitarian corridors allow people to reach only Russia and Belarus, that is, enemy territory, and Ukraine has rejected the use of these corridors.
