The Russian health authorities say the Russian vaccine against the new coronavirus called Sputnik V is 95 percent effective. The score is derived from preliminary results of volunteer trials 42 days after the administration of the first component of the vaccine.
The country hopes that 2 million doses will be available by the end of this year. Trials are still underway with the two-part vaccine from the Gamaleya Medical Research Institute. There are 16,000 volunteers involved according to Russian media. 117,000 doses of the relatively inexpensive vaccine against Covid-19 have already been put into circulation. It costs less than $ 20 per patient in the international market. In Russia, the vaccine will be provided free of charge from January.
There is great interest in the drug abroad. 1.2 billion doses have already been ordered by parties in more than fifty countries. The production of Sputnik V will also be started in Brazil, China, India, and South Korea, among others.
Russia wants to vaccinate people en masse at the beginning of next year, but that will be done on a voluntary basis. The country has more than 145 million inhabitants and more than 73 million corona tests have been carried out. The government is very concerned about the continuing increase in the number of (death) cases. So far, 2.1 million people have been tested positive and 37,000 patients have succumbed to the virus, according to statistics
