FC Twente made an excellent start to the new Eredivisie season last week: in Nijmegen they won 1-2 against NEC Nijmegen. Joseph Oosting’s team wants to continue this excellent start to the competition tonight in their own Grolsch Veste, where Sparta Rotterdam will visit. Kick-off in Enschede is at 18:45. The first half was one to quickly forget. FC Twente had more of the ball, but had great difficulty with the bus parked by Sparta. The visitors came closest to the opening goal. Unnerstall had no chance, but the post helped the German. At half-time Oosting decided to substitute two players. Lammers remained behind with a shoulder injury and was replaced by Rots. Taha was brought in for Van Bergen.
There was immediate danger in the second half, because Eiting shot from outside the sixteen-yard box onto the crossbar. After Sparta had also hit the crossbar, Kjolo was brought into the team for Eiting in the 57th minute. After Sparta had hit the aluminium for the third time, Regeer was brought in for Ltaief in the 66th minute. At that point, the match could still have gone either way. In the 75th minute, FC Twente took a 1-0 lead from an easily awarded penalty. Steijn took aim and did not fail. In the 82nd, the last Twente substitution.
