Why is Donald Trump’s decision to hold his first meeting in Tulsa, the capital of Oklahoma, shocking? Beyond the controversy linked to the fact of bringing together 20,000 people in a State where there is precisely an increase in the number of cases of covid (more than 400 Thursday June 18, when there were less than 200 per day until June 12), this is the place that poses the problem.
Indeed, while the country is still shaken by waves of demonstrations denouncing racist violence, it is in this city that took place, 99 years ago, the largest racial riot in the United States, with the death from 100 to 300 people. A massive lynching, triggered by the fact that a young black man had stepped on the feet of a white woman in an elevator.
Despite his arrest and trial, that does not prevent part of the white community from coming together to attack the black district of the city, flourishing to the point of being nicknamed Black Wall Street. Two days of violence will follow, in which several hundred people will be killed.
It will take 75 years for part of the truth to be revealed about this event.
