Beyond the pacts, one month after the general elections, the Congress of Deputies is constituted, in a process that includes the assignment of the components of the table and the election of the president of the Chamber.

This process is an essential part of the democratic functioning of Spain and is carried out under the regulations established in Organic Law 5/1985, of the General Electoral Regime, which seeks to guarantee that political decisions are made in full freedom and reflect the right to vote. of citizenship.

After the configuration of the Congress, in subsequent days, King Felipe VI receives the representatives of the parties with parliamentary representation at the Palacio de la Zarzuela, after which he will propose a candidate for the presidency of the Government.

The election of this candidate is carried out through the Investiture Session, a process that has been crucial in Spanish democracy since its establishment in 1978. If Congress grants its confidence to this candidate with the absolute majority of its members, that is, , with at least 176 deputies, the formation of the new Government is specified.

However, if the proposed candidate does not reach the required majority, a two-month period opens during which new investiture attempts can be made. If the necessary support is not obtained during this period, the Cortes is dissolved and new general elections are called, which must be held 54 days after said dissolution.
