LIVE | Predecessor Jaap van Dissel: shameful that we are going to vaccinate so late | Inland

Roel Coutinho, former director of the Center for Infectious Disease Control of the RIVM, calls it “astonishing” and “also a bit shameful” that the Netherlands is the last in the European Union to start vaccinating against the corona virus. He said this in Nieuwsuur on Monday evening.

“We are a very well organized country and you would say yes we can,” said Coutinho about the vaccination campaign. “And when it turns out that it takes quite a long time before you can start, I find that quite astonishing.”

According to the former RIVM boss, the fact that the Netherlands starts relatively late means that the overburdening of care will continue for longer. And according to him, that not only has a negative effect for people who contract the corona virus, but also for other patients. “They cannot be included, or operations must be postponed. So that has very far-reaching consequences. In fact, every week counts. ”

He also has little understanding for the government’s decision to start vaccinating care workers in nursing homes, among other places. The Health Council advises to start with the elderly themselves. “The moment you deviate from a scientifically substantiated advice, you must have good arguments. I have not encountered it. ”

Coutinho is emeritus professor of epidemiology and was the predecessor of Jaap van Dissel at the RIVM.
