It is uncertain whether the capacity in intensive care units can be scaled up in the event of a new corona wave in the autumn. There may not be enough staff, and that is again because hospitals do not want to accommodate them, the nursing organization V&VN warns in the AD.
“All agreements about what IC nurses need to be able to work properly are not or insufficiently fulfilled,” says Rowan Marijnissen of V&VN. This concerns, for example, requirements in the field of schedules, training and childcare. “If they don’t listen, it frustrates. There is a real risk that those people will no longer work hours or even say goodbye to healthcare. ”
Research by V&VN shows that three-quarters of IC nurses are unwilling to work more hours if a second corona wave breaks out. “Many colleagues are tired and lack appreciation. That is demotivating and I am very concerned about that ”, says Marijnissen.
Bianca Buurman, chief nursing officer at the Ministry of Health, acknowledges in the paper that a problem may arise. “Means, beds and equipment, that is all arranged. But the big question is: do we have enough staff? ”
