The Ministry of Defense is making 100 military care providers available to help in UMC Utrecht. They should start next week to relieve the pressure on the hospital during the second wave of corona patients.
The ministry reports this on Wednesday evening. The idea is that this will allow the Utrecht hospital to take in 26 extra patients, so that corona patients can also be taken over from other hospitals. This allows UMC Utrecht to open a second department for specific corona care. The total capacity in terms of beds is thereby increased from 26 to 52 beds.
During the first wave, the Ministry of Defense already helped defecting hospitals. Now that the second wave is emerging, the ministry is receiving more and more requests for help. The deployment of defense personnel in hospitals is coordinated by the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS), which communicates with the Ministries of Defense and Justice.
The LCPS is responsible for the nationwide distribution of defense personnel during the corona crisis. The Utrecht UMC provided the first training courses for the military care providers on Wednesday.
The military support provided in Utrecht consists of doctors, nurses and coordinating personnel. Hospitals are currently struggling with shortages in nursing wards. The Defense contribution is aimed at easing that burden somewhat.
