409 new corona infections were registered on Curaçao on Friday. That is the highest number in a day since the start of the corona pandemic.
In total there are now 2021 active infections on the island. A week earlier there were 879, and a week before 240. The rapid increase seems mainly to be the result of the British variant.
The number of corona patients on Bonaire also continues to increase. As of Friday, there are 448 active infections on the island. Thirteen people had to be hospitalized. Ten of these have been admitted to the island itself, three are in intensive care. Two patients from Bonaire are in the hospital on Curaçao, and one in Aruba.
Several cases of the British corona variant have been recorded on the island. It was previously said that other variants, such as the Brazilian, among others, were found there, but that appears not to be the case.
Due to the rapidly increasing number of infections on Bonaire, the island will receive accelerated vaccines from the Netherlands in the coming weeks, so that all adults can be vaccinated. Outgoing State Secretary Paul Blokhuis of Public Health called the situation on Bonaire “very worrying”.

15.00 – Matthäus-Passion Concertgebouw Orchestra canceled
The stream of a new performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Philippe Herreweghe has been canceled. An external employee was tested positive for corona during the preparation, according to a spokesperson for the orchestra. “As a precaution, it has been decided to cancel the rehearsals and the registration.”
As a replacement, the Concertgebouw Orchestra will stream the 2012 performance of the St Matthew Passion conducted by Iván Fischer. This stream will take place on Saturday at 8 p.m. via the orchestra’s Facebook and YouTube channels, after which it can be seen again for two weeks on concertgebouworkest.nl/video.
14.00 – Hospitals again provide less care
Hospitals were able to provide less care last month and saw fewer patients than before the corona outbreak, the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) reports. The number of patients currently undergoing treatment is even below that of 2019.
From the beginning of December to the beginning of February, more people were treated than before the corona outbreak. “Hospitals may then be catching up on care that had previously been canceled or postponed,” the authority explains. However, the number of treatments fell again in the course of February. Only in urology, internal medicine, surgery and obstetrics and gynecology were more patients treated than usual.
The number of referrals to hospitals and independent clinics was 94 percent of what would have been expected without a corona pandemic.
11.46 – Germany requires corona test for air travelers from Tuesday
Germany is postponing the mandatory corona test for all incoming air travelers for a few days. Instead of Sunday, the measure will not be introduced until Tuesday, health minister Jens Spahn reports.
The authorities want to give airlines and other stakeholders more time for preparations. At the moment, only some of the travelers are compulsorily tested. It only concerns the people who come from a country with a lot of infections.
Airlines are only allowed to take passengers with them from Tuesday if they can show a recent corona test with a negative result. There is only an exception for the crew of the aircraft. They are not subject to the testing obligation.
10.55 – Dentists and veterinarians in France are also allowed to vaccinate
The French health authorities have determined that dentists and veterinarians can also be involved in the vaccinations against the corona virus. The High Health Authority (HAS) is further expanding the number of professional groups that are allowed to vaccinate in the vaccination campaign.
This could speed up the campaign. The HAS estimates that with dentists, veterinarians and pharmacists, 250,000 additional people will now be available for vaccination. The government has yet to formally approve the HAS’s advice.
10.49 – Norway later decides to resume AstraZeneca vaccinations
Norway is postponing the decision on the resumption of AstraZeneca vaccinations, Norwegian broadcaster TV2 reports. The authorities would announce on Friday whether the corona vaccine can be administered again.
It is not clear when the decision will be made. A spokesperson for the Norwegian health authorities declined to comment on TV2’s coverage.
Use of the AstraZeneca vaccine was suspended on March 11 due to concerns about both clots and a decreased platelet count in people vaccinated with it. Six reports are known in Norway, four of which were fatal.
Other European countries also temporarily left the vaccine on the shelf, but most countries have resumed vaccinations. This happened after a new positive advice from the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The World Health Organization (WHO) also ruled that the drug could be used again.
6.01 – Smart bracelet detects early corona contamination
UMC Utrecht is researching a smart bracelet that can detect infection with Covid-19 at an early stage. The hospital is only looking for 20,000 adults to participate in the study. It is the so-called Ava bracelet, which is normally used by women to monitor fertility.

The researchers are hopeful that the device can help in the fight against corona. The bracelet continuously measures indicators such as temperature, heart rate and respiration. Before the wearer has symptoms, the device can already report an infection. The wearer is notified to be tested. “A higher temperature can indicate the onset of fever and coughing and shortness of breath also have a direct effect on breathing. A change of these factors together may indicate an infection with Covid-19 ”, says Rick Grobbee, professor of clinical epidemiology at UMC Utrecht. He’s in charge of the investigation.
Participants wear the bracelet at night. “This is the first smart device to process real-time data. And that is important because if you detect a Covid-19 infection at an early stage, you can immediately go into quarantine, which means that you are less likely to infect another. This technology could play an important role in containing this pandemic and identifying infectious diseases in the future, ”said Grobbee.
6.00 – Number of new corona infections in Germany slightly down
The number of new corona cases in Germany is slightly lower than Thursday. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of the RIVM, registered 21,573 new corona infections on Friday morning. A day earlier, 22,657 new cases were reported, up from about 16,000 on Wednesday. This was the largest increase in the number of cases since January 9.
In total, the coronavirus has been diagnosed in 2,734,753 people in Germany since the start of the pandemic. In the past 24 hours, another 183 people died from the effects of Covid-19. The corona virus has already claimed more than 75,000 lives in Germany.
In Germany, the lockdown will in principle run until April 18. However, states have extensive powers to make their own policies. For example, the German state of Saarland announced on Thursday that it would end the lockdown after Easter. Cinemas, sports centers and restaurants with outdoor space may open their doors again, but visitors do need a negative result of a rapid corona test.
