LIVE | Mayors await a cabinet for mandatory masks | Inland

The mayors of a number of large cities are in favor of a masking obligation, but are waiting for the cabinet to impose such an obligation.

Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam wants an obligation, but a national designation is required. This summer, Rotterdam, together with Amsterdam, instituted a temporary mouth masking obligation on a trial basis. “Such a pilot is legally possible, but an obligation in the longer term is not,” explains a spokesman for Aboutaleb.

The mayors of The Hague and Eindhoven also say they support a national obligation. “I think it is important that our cabinet indicates that it is a duty and that it means that shops, catering establishments and institutions can refuse people who do not wear a face mask,” said Mayor John Jorritsma of Eindhoven on Tuesday.

Mayor Femke Halsema of Amsterdam said last week that it has been investigated whether it is possible to introduce a mouth masks obligation regionally, but this is legally difficult. Her spokeswoman says that a national designation for “preferably a national obligation” is needed.

Mayor Peter den Oudsten of Utrecht does not want to comment on an obligation. “Utrecht follows national policy,” said a spokesman. Even if the cabinet does not impose an obligation, but it only requires urgent advice, Utrecht supports this.

On Monday evening, mayors said in the Security Council that they want to get rid of the urgent advice for wearing a mouth mask in public space, as it currently applies. It creates a lack of clarity and cannot be properly enforced, according to the mayors.
