The peak of the second corona wave in the Netherlands is in sight. This is the view of Jacco Wallinga, head of the Infectious Disease Modeling department at RIVM. On Tuesday, the Netherlands counted more than 10,000 corona infections in a day for the third time, but the explosive growth has stopped, according to Wallinga.

Wallinga also sees the reproduction number drop towards one. “He is still slightly above it, according to our estimate now. But I want to beware of conclusions that are too quick. The bad thing about these days is: we suspect that we are reaching the peak, but you can only really conclude that when you are over it and the numbers really drop. I hope and expect that we can say that this weekend or shortly after, ”Wallinga said in an interview with the AD.

The ‘R’ now stands at 1.16. That means that one person lights an average of 1.16 other people. The cabinet wants that number at least below 1, so that it can get the virus under control more quickly. The spread of virus then diminishes and gradually stops.

Minister Hugo de Jonge of Public Health estimated on Tuesday that the reproduction number is now approximately 0.88. He wants to lower that number even further.
