LIVE | Lawyers Marengo lawsuit angry about ban on laptops in EBI Vught: ‘This is muscle-rolling’ | Inland

Our reporter Saskia Bellleman is present at the case. Follow her live report at the bottom of this post.

The public prosecutor points out that, since the arrest of lawyer Youssef Taghi, it is forbidden for lawyers to take a laptop into the Extra Secure Institution (EBI) in Vught. That was a reason for lawyer Nico Meijering to stop the active defense of Mo Razzouki.

A USB stick is suggested as a solution, but Meijering doesn’t like that. “What are people afraid of”, Meijering asks, “that I am going to plan an outbreak with my client? That I’m going to plot murders with him? But I can do that perfectly without a laptop, can’t I?”

According to Meijering, the measure is ‘muscle rolling’ by the minister and the EBI. He wants the court to stay the case until he can take his laptop back into the EBI as a lawyer to do his job.

Advocate Inez Weski also objects to the use of a USB stick. She does not see a USB stick with confidential information in someone else’s laptop as a good solution either.

‘He’s lying’

Last Tuesday, the court had great difficulty in keeping Marengo suspect Mohamed R. in check during his interrogation of the key witness. In the extensive liquidation process, a few sub-files were discussed that had previously been left behind. R., former best friend of star witness Nabil B., was also given the opportunity to ask questions, which degenerated into an almost unstoppable waterfall of speech.

R. asked the crown witness several questions about PGP telephones, which can be used to send encrypted messages. The crown witness indicated that information was no longer entirely clear to him, whereupon R. fulminated: “He lies, it does help him.” The crown witness has also made incriminating statements about his former friend, about involvement in liquidations. R. denies all allegations.

R. currently has to do without a lawyer because his lawyer Nico Meijering previously decided to “no longer actively conduct the defense” in protest. In recent weeks, he has not been able to discuss the file in a decent way, because data carriers are no longer allowed to enter the EBI, the high-security prison in Vught.

Delivered

The main suspect in the Marengo trial is Ridouan Taghi. Another main suspect is Saïd R. He was extradited to the Netherlands last week, after he was arrested in Colombia at the beginning of last year. Said is the older brother of Mohamed R.
