18.25 – Italy resumes vaccinations with AstraZeneca vaccine
Italy is going to use AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine again now that European medicine watchdog EMA has again ruled it safe. The vaccinations will resume on Friday. The priority is to vaccinate as many people as possible as soon as possible, Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s office reports.
A whole row of European countries, including the Netherlands, has temporarily stopped administering the vaccine from the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company as a precaution. The blood clots after vaccination with the vaccine from AstraZeneca may be due to the fact that the medicine can cause a powerful immune reaction, which in turn leads to the blood clots. Scientists at the University Hospital of Oslo say that is the cause of the reports that several countries have suspended the use of the vaccine as a precaution.
The immune response produces antibodies that activate platelets and cause blood clots, said researcher Pål Andre Holme.
