India is the third country in the world to report more than four million corona infections. The Ministry of Health announced that an additional 86,432 people were diagnosed with the contagious virus in the past 24 hours.

The number of diagnosed infections in India rose from three to four million in 13 days. That is faster than in the United States and Brazil, the two most affected countries according to official figures. More than 6.3 million infections have been reported in the US, about 4.1 million in Brazil and 4.02 million in India.

The virus is spreading in India in large cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, but also in rural areas with less medical facilities. The death toll from the outbreak in the country with 1.3 billion inhabitants has now reached more than 69,000.

Earlier this year, the Indian government was forced to relax the strict lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus. The measures had worked out dramatically for millions of poor Indians. Many day laborers were suddenly out of work and sometimes traveled long distances on foot to reach their villages.

The official figures on the number of deaths and corona cases in India do not provide a complete picture of the magnitude of the outbreak. Not all infections are revealed because not all people are tested with the virus.
