Live: House of Representatives elections 2023 | ‘University filed a report against PVV scout for fraud’

There is a line of about 15 people in front of the Anne Frank House at 9:30 am. If your ballot is in the mail, you can enter the museum for free today. “It is so nice that you are now standing in the Anne Frank House with only Amsterdam residents, instead of constantly hearing English or Chinese around you,” says Katrien (68), who does not want to be mentioned by full name. She votes for GroenLinks-PvdA. To a woman, she always does that.

Michiel (56), who also does not want to be named, votes for himself and his wife. “My wife is not a very moody person,” says the Amsterdammer. Normally he leaves it at that, but during these House of Representatives elections he thought it was too important. “It’s all about it. Today every vote counts.”

Jorn Slotboom (33) votes strategically, for GroenLinks-PvdA. “I don’t agree with them on every level, but the alternative is VVD or PVV, I don’t want that.” He would have preferred to vote D66 or Splinter, the latter came from his voting guide.

The vote of Tom Zwarts (37), who walked out of the Anne Frank House with Slotboom, goes to the Party for the Animals. He has been voting for that for a long time. “I think animals are important, I think the environment is important, I think people are important – and they think so too.”

Yesterday the friends were still discussing their vote today. That of Bas den Bode (33) ultimately goes to BIJ1. “I think they have good positions on climate and inequality.”

The special voting location is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The museum is closed to other audiences on Wednesday. Voters receive a red pencil with a quote from Anne Frank on it: ‘How wonderful it is that no one has to wait a minute before changing the world!’

The Anne Frank House is a polling station for the first time this year. The museum wants to draw attention to ‘the great importance of freedom, equal rights and democracy’. It is ‘one of the places that remind what can happen when democracy and the rule of law disappear’, according to the Anne Frank Foundation.

Mayor Halsema previously reported that special attention is paid to the security of the polling station, ‘given the situation in Israel and the Palestinian areas’.
