LIVE | Half more corona infections in the past week than the week before | Inland

In the past week, 50 percent more people tested positive for the coronavirus than a week earlier. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has received 5,427 reports about new infections. In the previous weekly report there were 3597. The previous week the number of positive tests was only slightly higher: 3588.

RIVM received 17 reports of deaths last week. At the previous publication, 24 people had died. 89 new Covid-19 patients were admitted to the nursing wards of hospitals, to the intensive-care wards 19. Last week there were 65 and 11 respectively, according to figures provided by the RIVM from the National Intensive Care Evaluation Foundation (NICE).

Reports of deaths and hospitalizations often arrive with some delay.

Especially in South Holland and North Holland, the number of infections has risen sharply. In those provinces, more than 50 people per 100,000 inhabitants became ill last week. The number was lowest in Drenthe, with only 3 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

Young people and schools

RIVM sees the largest increase among relatively young people. People between the ages of 20 and 24 take the cake: one in five positive people who tested positive falls within this age category. This is followed by 25 to 29 year olds. The virus was also found in 551 teens ages 15 to 19. They account for 10.5 percent of the total number of positive tests.

Despite the increase in the number of infections among young people, the RIVM does not yet see any problems at schools. “There is no significant increase in the number of patients related to the spread in schools. In the few known clusters in schools, adults in particular have infected other adults, ”the institute said.

The so-called reproduction number has increased from 1 to 1.17. This means that one hundred people with the corona virus infect 117 others. Because this figure is somewhat uncertain, RIVM maintains a margin between 1.08 and 1.27.

Infected at home

Most people have become infected at home, according to the contact investigations of the GGD. Visits to family and friends and holidays are also often cited as a likely source of contamination.
