LIVE | France, Italy and Germany report corona records | Inland

France, Italy, Germany and other European countries reported record numbers of corona infections on Thursday. More and more governments are forced to reinstate lockdowns due to the rapidly growing number of corona infections.

The French authorities announced that over 41,000 people were diagnosed with the virus in one day. The corona record fell shortly after authorities announced that curfews are being introduced in more places in the country. Prime Minister Jean Castex said that 46 million French people will be affected by that emergency measure. That is about two thirds of the population.

Italy also reported the largest increase in the number of corona infections so far. It concerned more than 16,000 new cases. Some Italian politicians described the way in which their country is fighting the corona virus at the end of September as a ‘model’ for the world, but the number of infections has since risen sharply again.

Germany reported on Thursday morning that over 11,000 new infections were diagnosed in the last 24 hours. That number was well above the latest record number reported last Saturday. Then, according to official figures, 7,830 infections were added. Portugal (3,270 new corona cases), Croatia (1,563) and Slovenia (1,663) also reported records.

Slovakia, Slovenia, Portugal and Ireland

More and more countries are taking strict corona measures. Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic announced that a partial lockdown will be introduced in his country this weekend. Many schools close for a month and people have to stay at home en masse.

Slovaks are still allowed to leave their home to work, to do essential shopping or to walk in the countryside near their home. People who are tested and found not to be infected probably don’t need to adhere to some restrictions.

In Slovenia, citizens are again faced with stricter rules. Prime Minister Janez Jansa announced that many companies will have to close their doors from Saturday. This includes shopping centers, restaurants and hotels. People should also work from home as much as possible.

In Portugal, a partial lockdown will apply on Friday in the hard-hit places Felgueiras, Lousada and Pacos de Ferreira. The approximately 160,000 inhabitants must have a valid reason to leave their home for the time being.

Ireland also actually went into lockdown again on Thursday. Residents are asked to stay at home as much as possible and many companies have to close their doors. A Dublin resident told AFP that many friends are in trouble with themselves. “Because of this second lockdown, we cannot socialize or meet.”
