It is still too early for a safe passage for travelers within the European Union vaccinated against the corona virus, says the president of the European government leaders. Before such a ‘corona vaccination passport’ could be introduced, more people must first have received an injection. Otherwise, skewed eyes threaten, says chairman Charles Michel.

Greece is arguing for such a vaccination certificate, in the hope of being able to welcome the tourists that are so important to the economy. The Greek Prime Minister is supported by other Southern European holiday countries. EU leaders will discuss the proposal on Thursday at a new video summit on the fight against the corona pandemic.

“It is clear to me that we need to vaccinate more people” before the introduction of a corona vaccination passport would come up, said the chair of the EU’s Council of Heads of Government and Heads of State in the political talk show Buitenhof. “Implementing that too early would provoke huge frustration in Europe.”

Michel does not rule out that it will later come from a European corona passport. But he “also knows that the issue is sensitive” in several EU countries. The Netherlands, among others, has reservations. After all, it is still unclear how long vaccinated people will be protected and whether they can continue to spread the virus. Moreover, in some countries there is a reluctance to attach consequences to the vaccination, for fear that people will feel compelled to get an injection.

Also experts from the World Health Organization WHO are currently not in favor of proof of vaccination against Covid-19 for international travelers.
