PROLONGED CONTAINMENT IN GUADELOUPE

Containment is extended until September 19 in Guadeloupe to try to stop the spread of the coronavirus in the island, regional prefect Alexandre Rochatte announced on Wednesday at a press conference. The epidemic is experiencing a “slight decrease” but still remains “worrying”, said Valérie Denux, director general of the Regional Health Agency of Guadeloupe, at the same weekly press conference.

“It seems that we have passed the peak of contaminations” but the peak of hospitalizations is still experiencing a lag of several days, she added. During the week ended August 22, less than 6,000 new cases of Covid-19 were identified while 336 people were hospitalized, according to the health bulletin released by the authorities.

“Currently, 80 patients are in intensive care, eleven in critical care (intensive oxygenation) and 310 patients are hospitalized in medical service on the 406 beds open on the island,” said the bulletin, indicating that 43 people were “hospitalized in home on the 50 open places “. During the same period, 115 people died from Covid-19 in hospitals in Guadeloupe.

The start of the school year, it was postponed to September 13 and “will be done mostly in distance”, said at the press conference the rector of the academy Christine Gangloff-Ziegler.

The containment and curfew in force since July 30 in Martinique have also been extended by three additional weeks, until September 19 inclusive, according to a press release from the island’s prefecture on Tuesday.
