Live Coverage of Donald Trump’s Impeachment with Latest News, Reactions and Up-to-the-Minute Updates

How Republican Lawmakers Are Reacting To Donald Trump’s Impeachment

Some Republican lawmakers are criticizing the Manhattan grand jury’s indictment of Donald Trump on Thursday. This is what they are saying:

Senator John Cornyn: the member of the Senate Republican leadership, told CNN that Trump’s impeachment “seems like this is an opportunity for this (district attorney) to try to make headlines and gain publicity.”

Representative James Comer: The House Oversight Chairman attacked former President Donald Trump’s “political witch hunt” the day after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted him.

“Something that concerns us in Washington, Congressman Jordan and I, is whether there is coordination here between Merrick Garland, the DOJ and all these different entities that are going after Donald Trump,” Comer told Fox on Friday. “This is a political witch hunt, they are doing everything they can to create a narrative that would hurt Donald Trump.”

Comer told CNN that the Bragg investigation is “a political stunt.”

Prior to impeachment, Comer and two other House speakers sent a letter requesting testimony and information from Bragg about their investigation.

Senator John Barrasso: the chairman of the Senate Republican Conference called the impeachment a “political coup” in a statement to CNN.

“This is a politically motivated prosecution by a far-left activist. If it was anyone other than President Trump, a case like this would never come up. Instead of ordering hit political jobs, New York prosecutors should focus on getting violent criminals off the streets,” he said.

Representante Marjorie Taylor Greene: Trump’s key ally, who is also close to the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, tweeted that she plans to travel to New York City on Tuesday to protest the impeachment of Donald Trump, the latest sign of how Republicans are racing to defend the former president.

Greene is a member of the House Oversight Committee, one of the key committees trying to investigate the Manhattan district attorney’s office, and told CNN that he regularly updates Trump on his investigative priorities.

Representative Mike Johnson: Johnson, a member of the House Republican leadership, attacked Bragg, saying the impeachment “almost guaranteed” that former President Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee for president.

“The person who denigrates the integrity, the integrity of our entire judicial system is Alvin Bragg, this Soros-funded political activist who occupies the Manhattan district attorney’s office,” Johnson said on Fox News on Friday. “He is spending all his time and resources going after the former president. Because? The timing is important, because the president has announced that he will run again.

The impeachment “guaranteed” that Trump is the Republican presidential nominee “and likely to get re-election” in 2024, Johnson added.
