LIVE | Corona measures may be needed in more regions | Inland

The stricter corona measures for six busy regions where the virus has recently flared up will start on Sunday at 6 p.m. Some exceptions are made to the maximum group size that will be announced. This includes funerals, insiders report after reporting by the NOS. Last week, a total of fifteen Dutch corona deaths were added, out of a total of more than six thousand.

Earlier it became clear that catering establishments in the regions concerned must be closed at 1 a.m. for the time being. No new guests may be admitted from midnight. Groups may consist of a maximum of fifty people.

The virus is spreading so quickly in the risk regions that the cabinet will probably come up with measures on Friday to prevent its spread. But there are more regions where alarm bells are going off. The figure that the government looks at is the so-called signal value. If the number of infections in a region rises to more than 7 in every 100,000 inhabitants, local measures may be needed.

The six regions where the most infections are currently found are Amsterdam-Amstelland, Rotterdam-Rijnmond, Haaglanden, Utrecht, Kennemerland and Hollands Midden. It contains the four major cities, Haarlem, Leiden and Gouda.

Amsterdam-Amstelland reported a record number of 298 new infections on Thursday. That equates to 27.8 cases for every 100,000 inhabitants. That is almost four times the signal value. The last time that Amsterdam and the surrounding area remained below that limit was on August 22, almost a month ago.

Rotterdam-Rijnmond has been at about 20 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in recent days, and in Haaglanden that number has been between 15 and 20 for a few days. Both regions have remained below the signal value for only three days since 1 September.

Other regions may be facing emergency measures. Gelderland-Zuid (Nijmegen and surroundings), for example, exceeded the signal value five times in the past eight days. Gooi en Vechtstreek, Flevoland and Zuid-Holland Zuid have had more than 7 infections for every 100,000 inhabitants for a few days.

The province of Groningen fluctuates around the signal value. The city of Groningen with its student life has been well above the limit for days, but the number of infections in the Ommelanden is not too bad. Relatively little is noticeable of the corona virus in Drenthe. The province recorded 15 new cases on Thursday, the highest number since the end of April, but that comes down to 3 infections per 100,000 Drenthe. The provinces of Friesland, Zeeland and Limburg and the regions of Twente and Noord-Holland Noord also have relatively few infections for the time being.
