The provinces along the German border braced themselves on Saturday for an expected arrival of large numbers of Germans. It is 3 October, Day of German Unity, and traditionally German merchants come across the border en masse to go shopping in Enschede, Winterswijk Venlo and Roermond. The border cities have prepared far-reaching measures to prevent it from becoming too busy during this corona time.
Winterswijk and Venlo warned Germans earlier this week to stay away. Enschede also advises Germans in all kinds of ways in the coming days to come to the city of Twente on Saturday. In the most extreme case, the municipality will close off parts of the center that are too busy.
Something similar applies to Venlo. When it gets busy there, Venlo locks up shopping centers, streets and parking garages. In interviews with eight German media, Mayor Antoin Scholten of Venlo called on the eastern neighbors to stay away from both Venlo and Roermond.
Traffic measures are being taken in Roermond to deter Germans, a spokesman said. Along the N280 from the border to the Designer Outlet, which is popular with Germans, info boards with texts such as ‘turn around’, said the spokesman. When busy, traffic measures can also be taken that lead to long traffic jams to discourage Germans in this way.
Incidentally, there are no checks by the military police at the borders with Germany, a spokesman for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee said. This was previously the case. The Marechaussee stopped Germans at the border in April and May and tried to talk them out of coming to the Netherlands. This in connection with the risk of contamination with the corona virus. Many Germans did not take much notice of this advice and nevertheless drove on.
