Wout Weghorst became the man of the match against FC Groningen with a fantastic substitute. With just under ten minutes to go and the score 1-1, the striker was brought on. His added value was clear. Weghorst scored a goal in the 91st minute and provided the assist for Chuba Akpom’s 3-1.
“These are the best substitutes,” the striker laughed at ESPN. The attacker started on the bench, because he had already let Slavia Prague shoot out. It was also questionable whether he could play against FC Groningen at all, Weghorst admitted. “It was a bit of an edge with my hamstring. But I wanted to, even if it was only fifteen minutes, where I could be important. And that happened.”
Ajax’ number 25 also had a compliment for the man who assisted in the 2-1: Anton Gaaei. “It was a really fantastic cross. You just have to ‘fall into it’. We talked about this during training. If you get it like that, then that is very nice.”
Ultimately, the stadium went wild in injury time and Weghorst was sung passionately. “That’s why you’re in football.”
