If there is a European destination where it is possible to experience the magic of Christmas at the highest level, it is Brussels. At this time of year, the Belgian capital carries out a great display of attractions and activities for all ages, from legendary markets to light and sound shows in the Grand Place, including Christmas trees, an ice rink, a Ferris wheel giant, choirs…
In Brussels, Christmas is a whole festival, known as “Winter Fun” (“Winter Pleasures”), which opens on November 24 with a lively parade in the Grand Place. This central square is where the large Christmas tree is installed and where the light and sound show takes place, every day from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Without a doubt, its main tourist attraction is the market that is distributed throughout the heart of the city, along a route of about 2.5 kilometers. It is made up of about 250 stalls, offering all kinds of typical Brussels and Christmas products. In the Place de Sainte-Catherine and the Bourse, food lovers can find a wide variety of sweet and savory products, to eat on the spot or take home, and the most original gifts. You cannot miss an area dedicated to crafts.
The creative winter market organized at the Continental (Place de Brouckère) will take place every Friday (3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.), Saturdays and Sundays (1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) from December 1 to 24. It is a unique opportunity to discover the talent of local designers. Likewise, the Place de la Monnaie becomes an après-ski village until December 31, thanks to the installation of three artificial curling rinks, ideal for spending a fun day with the family. For those who prefer to skate, you can head to the large ice rink in Place de Brouckère, which is surrounded by stalls where you can continue eating and drinking in the purest traditional style. To admire the beauty of Brussels from above, the Ferris wheel installed in the Place Saint-Catherine is the perfect place.
The little ones will also have fun on “Magical Sundays” at the Tour Noire, with the best humor, fantasy and magic shows, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. In parallel, numerous spaces in Brussels organize other activities, such as exhibitions in museums such as the Costume and Lace Museum; cinema screenings of feature films, short films and documentaries; guided tours of the Town Hall and music concerts in front of churches and the cathedral, among others.
The miniature theme park Mini-Europe also celebrates the holidays. From December 9 to January 7, it will feature typical life-size Christmas decorations, such as friendly reindeer, a Christmas choir, Santa Claus taking off from the airport runway and even snowmen demonstrating against global warming, among others.
At the end of the day, the facades of the miniature scenes and gardens will be illuminated, creating an unforgettable play of light and shadow. All activities will take place until December 31, 2023, although some of them will be extended until January 8, 2024, so that tourists can continue enjoying the magic of Christmas like they have never done before.
