People who receive guests at home should wear a mouth mask if it is not possible to keep a sufficient distance, advises the World Health Organization. Even if it is uncertain whether rooms are sufficiently ventilated, mouth and nose cover is recommended.
The new guideline was published in Geneva on Wednesday. The WHO had previously only recommended masks in areas with many people, and had not given guidelines for indoors.
The organization also recommends wider use of mouth masks in healthcare. According to WHO, administrative employees and other personnel without a medical function must always wear a mouth mask in a healthcare facility.
In the initial phase of the corona pandemic, the WHO was skeptical about the usefulness of face masks, even when they were already widely used in European countries, following countries in Asia. The World Health Organization reiterated the message on Wednesday that mouth masks can give a false sense of security and make people forget to observe the basic (distance) rules.
