Salzburg companies have so far made relatively little use of the offer of the Public Employment Service (AMS) to massively subsidize the costs of retraining. The AMS assumes 60 percent of the costs.

Since October 2020, the start of “short-time work phase three”, companies can claim retraining costs for staff who are on short-time work. The Labor Market Service (AMS) assumes 60 percent of the costs. So far, however, only a relatively small number of companies have actually made use of this offer in the federal state of Salzburg.
Around 5,500 companies in the state of Salzburg have applied for “short-time work phase three”. But only a small part of them, namely 160 companies, have also applied for staff in training, says the regional manager of the Salzburg Employment Service, Jacqueline Beyer.
Currently 41,000 in Salzburg are on short-time work
41,000 people in the state of Salzburg are currently on short-time work. But just 235 people are in training and are being supported. This corresponds to almost 200,000 euros in subsidies paid out.
Beyer sees a difficulty in the fact that funding for training costs can only be applied for up to and including March 31. If the training period goes beyond that, it is only paid on a pro-rata basis, says Beyer. “For further funding, the company would have to apply again for short-time work. But now a lot of companies have speculated that there will finally be an opening and have therefore not invested in longer training. “
Training courses are intended to improve opportunities on the job market
The labor market-related training is intended to increase the chances on the labor market for those who are on short-time work in the event that short-time work is not extended and then there is a risk of unemployment.
