The family of little Mawda, shot dead in a chase with the police in 2018, believes that the facts should be reclassified. They are asking for murder charges.
Express audience this Friday at the Chamber of the Council of Mons. The civil parties in the Mawda case asked for a reclassification of the charges against the police officer, so that he was charged with murder. Mawda, a 2-year-old Kurdish girl, was killed in 2018, hit by the balls of a policeman during a chase. The policeman aimed at the tire of the van.
“They believe that it was a question of murder or deliberate assault and battery which caused death without intention to give it”, explains Laurent Kennes, the lawyer for the accused police officer. “We contest it, especially since there are no disputes about the way the facts are presented by my client”, then clarifies the lawyer.
“The police did not want to kill Mawda, but he intentionally shot a van full of migrants, which put lives at risk. We believe there is a willful offense”answers Selma Benkhelifa, lawyer for Mawda’s parents. The hearing before the Chamber of the Council of Mons was postponed to July 8.
