The cabinet of Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) briefly states that the proposal is “a brainstorm of the experts and not a political question”. “We have nothing more to add to that”, it still sounds. The spokesman for Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) refers to Corona Commissioner Pedro Facon. But he already had the same reaction on Monday as Minister Vandenbroucke.

The plan, which comes from motivational psychologist Maarten Vansteenkiste (UGent), is supported by Steven Van Gucht, among others. It consists in not working with data to reopen sectors, but with threshold values. In concrete terms, for example, hairdressers would only be able to open when the number of hospital admissions falls below a specific number. “I understand that people want to communicate dates, because it is very difficult to offer perspective to sectors if you do not provide a timeline,” says virologist Steven Van Gucht. “But we are now going to consider which epidemiological thresholds we want to achieve. We don’t want to question the dates that politicians previously communicated, but we do want to be epidemiologically sure that easing can be done safely. ”
